| | The Clarkes | | | | Henry Brown Clarke and his wife, Caroline Palmer Clarke, built their home in 1836. It is now Chicago's oldest home. | | | | Other Owners of Clarke House | | | | After the Clarke descendents sold the home in 1872, it had two other owners until the City acquired it in 1977. | | | | Moving Clarke House | | | | In 1977, the 120-ton Clarke House was moved more than four miles north to a location in the Prairie Avenue Historic District. Along the way, it became stuck in the air as movers pulled it across 'L' tracks. | | | | 1977 Restoration | | | | In addition to repairing the fire damage, grafting the house to its new foundation, and recreating its early decor, restorers also had to retrofit the house with the requirements of a public museum. | | | | 2004 Restoration | | | | In 2004, Chicago’s oldest home, the Clarke House Museum at 1827 S. Indiana Avenue, underwent work that restored the exterior to its 1850-1860 condition. | |
