800 S. Desplaines - Maxwell Street Permit Center
The Department of General Services recently renovated a one story painted concrete block structure for the new permanent offices of the Maxwell Street Market located at 800 South Desplaines.
The renovation of the existing structure utilized energy efficient technologies and is a registered LEED project.
Green Elements:
- Building Reuse - The entire building shell was retained. The existing facade was re-clad in a new modern rainwater system composed of high density cement board panels. The panels are set on a rain screen wall system designed to have air flow movement and isolate the structure from the heat of the sun, which increases energy efficiency.
- Recycled Content - Materials with recycled content included new floor tiles, rubber flooring, solid surface counters, and gypsum panels.
- Local Materials - A high percentage of raw building materials used in construction were manufactured within 500 miles of the job site thus reducing transportation costs and supporting the local economy.
- Low Volatile Organic Compound Emitting Materials - Low VOC paints and adhesives were specified for the project that improves indoor air quality.
- Optimizing Energy Performance - A green roof was added to the existing roof by incorporating a modular tray system. The roof was replaced with a new white high reflective membrane. Occupancy sensors and high efficiency fluorescent lighting were incorporated into the interior lighting system.
