Cab Fare Information
Below is a listing of how taxicab fares are determined and paid in the City of Chicago as of May 11, 2005:
- In Chicago, you pay the amount shown on the taximeter, plus any tolls,
- There is no extra charge for baggage or credit card use, and tipping is optional,
- The ¡°flag pull¡± or initial charge is $2.25 for the first 1/9 mile,
- The additional fraction of a mile charge is $.20 for each additional 1/9 mile,
- Every 36 seconds of time elapsed is $.20,
- The flat fee for the first additional passenger is $1.00,
- The flat fee for each additional passenger, after the first additional passenger is $.50.
Average Fares These are average fares from State and Madison Streets to various destinations. Fares will vary, depending on traffic conditions:
- State and Madison to O¡¯Hare: $30 - $35.
- State and Madison to Midway: $22 - $28.
- State and Madison to the United Center: $8 - $10.
Metered Fares Straight meter fares - fares with no special rates - apply to trips from Midway or O'Hare airports to the following suburbs. *All other trips are metered at one and one half the rate from Chicago's city limits to the suburbs.

Rates from O'Hare or Midway to all other suburbs are meter and one-half. Rates from Chicago, excluding O'Hare and Midway Airports, are straight meter to the city limits plus meter and one-half from the city limits to the destination. An additional charge of $1.00 is added to the total fare on each trip to or from O'Hare or Midway Airports under the State of Illinois Metropolitan Pier & Exposition Authority (MPEA) Airport Departure Ordinance. The tax should appear on the meter as an "extra" charge.
