Two Charged in Traffic Fatality

Police Seize Three Weapons

Two men were charged Monday for the weekend fatal traffic accident in the 1300 block of West 83rd Street.

Jermaine Cozart, 21 of the 4400 block of North Malden Street, was the driver of the car that caused the fatal accident.

Cozart was charged with reckless homicide and possession of a weapon by a felon. Cozart was also cited for driving on a suspended license, speeding, disobeying a red light and aggravated reckless driving.

Roy Diggs, 21 of the 5500 S. Shields Avenue, was charged with one count of weapon possession.

On Sunday, June 1, 2008, Chicago Police officers observed Cozart travelling at a high rate of speed and disobey a red light. The officers activated their emergency equipment and attempted to curb the vehicle but Cozart continued to drive and ignore the officers.

Subsequently, the officers were notified of a traffic crash in the 1300 block of West 83rd Street. Upon arrival, officers identified the offending vehicle and passengers from the earlier traffic violation. Two 9MM Beretta handguns and a .40 Cal Glock handgun were also recovered.

Cozart and Diggs were transported to Christ hospital. Diggs was treated and released. Cozart remains hospitalized.

Diggs was scheduled to appear in bond court on June 3, 2008.
