The Chicago Police Department will be conducting a Roadside Safety Check in the 2nd District at Garfield and Perry, beginning at 8:00 pm on April 4, 2008 and ending at 4:00 am on April 5, 2008. "The purpose of the program is to apprehend drivers who are operating vehicles while under the influence of alcohol or drugs," says Superintendent Jody P. Weis. "The program also offers an opportunity to issue citations to drivers who are otherwise a hazard to themselves and others on the public way." During roadside checks officers slow the traffic flow, stopping cars at regular intervals, speaking with drivers and watching for signs of alcohol impairment and other violations. The Roadside Safety Checks are funded by a grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and administered through the Illinois Department of Transportation.
