Wells Street improvement project

The Chicago Department of Transportation is improving Wells Street in the South Loop.

Construction crews will resurface Wells from Polk to 9th Streets, and add a new sewer main. From 9th to Roosevelt Road, crews will completely rebuild and pave the roadway, and add water and sewer mains.

Wells from Polk to Roosevelt will have one travel lane in each direction, with one parking lane on each side of the street. There will also be an eastbound left turn lane at Taylor for traffic traveling south on Wells.

Other improvements will also occur:

* 9th Street from Wells east to the Metra line will be constructed (with a new water main)

* Financial Place from Polk to 9th will be relocated about 150 feet west of its current alignment (with new water and sewer mains)

The $9 million project will provide significant benefit to traffic and help meet the needs of this growing area.

Traffic/pedestrian impacts

Wells north of Taylor Street will remain accessible throughout most of the project. Lane reductions and parking restrictions will be in place during various phases of the project.

Wells south of Taylor Street has controlled acccess only, and on-street parking is prohibited.

Access to all buildings will be maintained at all times

Parking impacts

The permit parking zone from Taylor Street to Roosevelt Road was removed in early 2008. Signs denote the change. No parking is allowed at any time in this area.

Access to all parking lots will be maintained. Throughout the project, CDOT will ensure the work has the least amount of impact possible to residents, businesses, motorists and pedestrians.

Project completion: summer 2009
