Certificate of Zoning Compliance
A Certificate of Compliance is issued by the Department of Zoning and Land
Use Planning for the sale of a structure containing five (5) residential units
or less. The certificate serves as notice between the seller and buyer of the
physical number of units located within the structure and the legal number of
units the City of Chicago has of record. The certificates are good for only one
(1) year from the date of issuance. They are not be used for violation
compliance, permit issuance and verification of legal non-conforming status.
You may apply for a certificate on the 9th floor of City Hall-
Room 905 at the Certification Window. You must have the following information to
file an application :
The application if approved will be issued within five (5) business days (not
including date of filing, weekends or holidays). If the application is denied
the contact person listed on the application will be notified.. You may pick-up
your approved certificate at the Certification Window. Your approved certificate
will be held at the window for seven (7) days, after the seventh day the
certificate will be mailed to the contact person listed.
