2006 Solar Thermal Grants Program Application
For Residential and Small Commercial Buildings
What
Solar Thermal Collectors use solar energy to heat water by:
- reflecting and concentrating light,
- converting the energy to be stored in fluid circulating through
the collectors and
- transferring that heat to preheat water in a hot water heater tank.
The City of Chicago’s Department of Environment will make
available 600 solar thermal collectors to be granted to health clubs,
laundromats, affordable housing units, and other businesses or
organizations that use a high volume of hot water. Installation
costs and any additional non-standard engineering costs incurred
are the sole responsibility of the applicant. The award is not
transferable or negotiable for cash.
Why
Solar thermal energy can help reduce annual energy costs and
emissions. By using existing gas or electric hot water heaters only to
supplement the solar thermal systems, these systems can reduce
water-heating costs by up to 70%. Dollar savings will vary based
on hot water use profiles and the efficiency of heating equipment
used. As part of the selection process, a professional assessment will
determine the estimated financial savings and emissions benefits for
your facility.
When
The Department of Environment invites representatives from
any health club, laundromat, social service or affordable housing
organization to attend one of the following informational meetings,
each of which will take place from 6:00 to 7:00 pm:
Tuesday, March 7, 2006 at the Chicago Center for Green
Technology, 445 North Sacramento Blvd.;
Thursday, March 16, 2006 at Solargenix Energy, 3622 S. Morgan St.
Applications will be accepted starting Wednesday, March 8, 2006
until Friday, April 28, 2006.
Grant awards will be announced in May, 2006.
