Virginia Wadsworth Wirtz Sports Program
The Virginia Wadsworth Wirtz Sports Program at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago is a year-
round, cross disability sports and recreation program.
More than 2300 registered participants of RIC's Wirtz Sports Program include approximately 70%
Chicago residents, the remaining 30% include individuals from over 130 Chicagoland communities.
The Wirtz Sports Program averages between 100-120 new individuals each year.
RIC's Wirtz Sports Program currently offers 18 different sports and recreational activities:
men's, women's and junior wheelchair basketball, quad rugby, swimming, tennis, wheelchair softball,
aerobics, strength and conditioning, track and roadracing, field events, powerlifting, skiing,
sitting volleyball, fencing, golf and outdoor education programs. Programs are free of charge to
all participants.
Part of Northwestern University's Chicago campus, the RIC's Center for Health and Fitness is located
in Abbott Hall, one block east of RIC's main facility.The 4,000 square foot facility was specifically
created for people with physical disabilities. Its purpose is to provide an arena for individuals to
develop their physical potential. From routine exercise programs to competitive opportunities, RIC's
Center for Health and Fitness is fully equipped to prepare members for the benefits of long-term wellness.
Personal exercise programs are specially designed for each participant during their first visit. Individuals
of all ages, backgrounds and levels of ability can be seen working out together at any given time.
