All major roadwork complete along South Lake Shore Drive

Crews this week will complete the last piece of major roadwork along the South Lake Shore Drive reconstruction project.

Drivers in the Jackson Park section of South Lake Shore Drive should expect new openings and traffic configuration changes this weekend. Effective Friday (Dec. 19), here's what drivers will find:
  • A section of Marquette Drive (6600 south) between Cornell Drive and Coast Guard Drive (South Lake Shore Drive) will reopen to traffic.
  • At the same time, work crews will begin the process of opening additional lanes near the intersection of 57th Drive and South Lake Shore Drive.
  • The changeovers are expected to take place throughout the day as work crews remove barrier walls, stripe the pavement, and synchronize the traffic signals.
  • Drivers are urged to be extra cautious in the area due to the close proximity of work crews and construction equipment. The speed limit in the area remains 35 mph, but drivers should be prepared to stop.
  • In other areas - especially in Burnham Park between 23rd Street and 57th Drive - drivers should always expect intermittent non-rush hour lane closures in both directions.
