Just What Exactly is Fly Dumping?

Dumping any waste material on either public or private property without a permit from the Department of Environment.

 

Trash that is commonly dumped includes:
  • tires
  • old furniture
  • household garbage
  • construction debris
  • appliances
  • yard waste
  • hazardous waste

But it can be anything!

What does Hazardous Waste Look Like?

Generally, it is dumped in drums or barrels

If you see someone dumping hazardous waste, Call 911.

 


The City of Chicago Aggressively Prosecutes Fly Dumpers Based on Information You Provide

  • We've got new laws and stiffer fines; up to $2,000 for the first offense.
  • Offenders are subject to jail time of up to 6 months and community service of up to 200 hours.
  • Vehicles are quickly towed and impounded, and the owner gets the bill.
The Department of Environment works in conjunction with the Police Department and Streets and Sanitation to enforce the law.

One dumper had more than 180 days of community service and $6,000 in fines, and his truck could not be reclaimed due to $2,000 in impoundment charges.

Rewards are given for information that leads to the conviction of fly dumpers.

 

After you Call
  • A Department of Environment inspector is dispatched to follow-up on what you have seen.
  • The inspector may issue a citation.
  • The police are notified to assist in making an arrest and impounding the vehicle.
